ANIHILATED "Created In Hate" (1988, Thrash Metal)

(For english version, please read below)

ENGLISH:

This band of thrash metal from London released during the eighties an EP and two LPs. Thanks to the Brazilian label Marquee Records this year saw the CD release of this work and also the second LP “The Ultimate Desecration”. During the last months the group reunited and revamped with the intention of recording a new album in 2009.

“Created In Hate” is raw and furious thrash metal with remarkable roots on old Slayer, old Metallica, and punk rock. They are eight songs that hit you in your face with the plus of contain interesting lyrics for this genre. So we have “Chase The Dragon” talking about the heroin and drugs abuse, musically attacks the listener with a pounding double bass (Bod on drums) during all the track. “Power Is the Path (To Destruction) focus on the consequences of power abuse, “Anihilated” (With killer riffs that Mark fires from his guitar) does the same but with the survivors of a nuclear war that saw the remains of the world.

“Slaughter” has a initial riff with a strong taste of “Kill ‘Em All” era. On all “Created In Hate” it is perfectly clear that it is present a strong vibe of old school thrash mixed with some punk. Anihilated do it really well and it feels really genuine, yet going back to that ages.

Without doubt they have “created” a work musically plenty of “hate” with tons of thrash... that one that the more nostalgic fans like me really love. For these re release they have included four live bonus tracks, and a booklet full of photos and histories of the band. Horns up to Anihilated!

ANCIENT RITES "Rubicon" (2006, Black/Viking/Folk Metal)

(ENGLISH VERSION READ BELOW)

ENGLISH:

This band from Belgium with many years of experience under their belts have done a work that is literally perfect and monumental in many and various aspects. After their last effort “Dim Carcosa”, founder member Gunther Theys (Vocalist on these CD, but previously bassist also) reorganize the line up, including old members of another moments of the group. I must confess that when this CD arrive at my home I give it twenty five spins during one entire week. The edition is excellent and the concept of the album relies on battle heroes (many times not recognized), history facts and referents of historical periods between other subjects. So we have “Templar” with memorable riffs and the band highly inspired mixing power, metal and epicism, the song talks about two anonym protagonists of The Crusades: the Arabian knight Saladin and the templar Van Ruddervoorde of Flanders.

“Mithras” focus in Mithra and his heathen christian cult (“Mithraism”), vastly popular between militars and merchants during 4th BC, this cult obligate to their adepts to be honest, pure and be brave. The practice of Mithraism as all other heathen cults was declared ilegal in the year 391 BC by the emperor Theodosius. “Thermopylae” referers to the battle between Spartans/Thespians and Persia. King Leonidas and three hundred spartan noblemen went on a suicide mission to halt the invading persian forces plagued of lethal archers. The title track is musically one of the finest moments, the emotion and energy gathered again. It is about the name of an ancient river that was the legal border between Italy and the province of Cisalpin Galia with the intention of protect Rome against internal militar threats and has special importance in the roman law because any general was allowed to cross that river with his troops in arms. Julius Caesar gave the order to the 13th legion for cross it in 49 AC pronouncing the well known phrase "alea iacta est" ("The die is cast"), from this event provides the expression "Cross the Rubicon" to mean and act that put you irrevocably into a risky enterprise and without point of return.

“Invictus” is based on the poem written by William Ernest Henley in 1875 where he mention this phrase “If one dares to stand out from the masses or speak his mind against the moral majority inevitably animosity will cross one’s path, it should matter not”. “Ypres” is a tribute to the killed in action in that city and zone during The Great War. That was the center of the bloody front of threnchs, 300.000 soldiers found their death, 250.000 of them were british. In the surrounding area there are 170 cemetaries that tribute that war. Totally destroyed, later it was carefully rebuilt. “Galilean” in my opinion is one of the most interesting lyrics because on it, Jesus is mentioned as an human being like a “Galilean” that had high moral values and not as the “Son Of God” that later Church adopted for their intentions, also the muslim prophet Mohammed is mentioned on the song.

“Cheruscan” talks about a batlle during the 9th AD under the reign of Augustus, that changed the course of roman and European history. At the Teutoburger forest, 16.5000 men were attacked by three germanic tribes. By the time the battle was over the Governor Gobernador Varus had commited suicide on the battlefield and three roman legions along with three cavalry units and possibly 10.000 camp followers were decimated.

“Brabantia” is based on Duke Ian Van Brabants, who had a valiant behaviourat the battle of Woeringen in 1288, and close this masterpiece that has tons of metal, inspired guitars, blast beats, female choruses, screams of war, and gives you the sensation of don’t press the “STOP” button of your CD player in any moment.

I consider “Rubicon” the best work to date from Ancient Rites. At the end of the booklet there is an interesting phrase “Listener and reader, we do hope you have enjoyed this musical/lyrical journey through time, to some this work might be an inspiration, be it philosophical, strength on your travel through life, respect and “live” the historical places you might visit”

These CD for me it was not only a display of subduing music full of fire, it was a really history lesson. It is better than “Dim Carcosa” (Aspect that yet it is very remarkable) How many bands bring a product like “Rubicon” during these years?. Right now I am waiting a new album from these Belgium warriors ¡Please, don’t stop to make more “ancient rites”!
